The Northwest Passage trip is raising money for charity Global Angels to provide safe drinking water for children in need, whilst raising awareness of climate change. For more information about the expedition please visit: North West Passage To donate, please use the "DONATE NOW" button in the following link: Global Angels The number of people lacking access to safe drinking water is 884 million and more than 2.6 billion miss a basic sanitation.
Global Angels is funding projects to build and refurbish water wells in the area, providing safe drinking water to thousands of children and their communities. In 2009 they provided water to 108,000 people in Kenya. Yet, millions more are still needing safe water.
Donating just £15 gives at least 1 person in Africa safe drinking water for 20 years. Step Up and Be an Angel... please donate!
When taken as human right, the right to water places certain responsibilities upon governments to ensure that people can enjoy "sufficient, safe, accessible and affordable water, without discrimination"
For example the 1989 Convention on the rights of the child (CRC) states: “Article 24 1. States parties recognize the right of the child to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health and to facilities for the treatment of illness and rehabilitation of health … 2. States parties shall pursue full implementation of this right and, in particular, shall take appropriate measures: (c) To combat disease and malnutrition, including within the framework of primary health care, through, inter alia, (…) the provision of adequate nutritious foods and clean drinking water (…)"
The 1979 Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) also states: " Article 14 (2) States parties shall take all appropriate measures to eliminate discrimination against women in rural areas in order to ensure, on a basis of equality of men and women, that they participate in and benefit from rural development and, in particular shall ensure to women the right: … (h) To enjoy adequate living conditions, particularly in relation to housing, sanitation, electricity and water supply, transport and communications."
However the most detailed definition of the content of the right to water came in 2002 from an expert body (CESCR) assessing the implementation of the ICESCR (International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights), a treaty only recognizing “implicitly” the right to water. This definition is detailed in General Comment 15 (hereafter GC 15), in which the Committee asserts: “The human right to water entitles everyone to sufficient, safe, acceptable, physically accessible and affordable water for personal and domestic uses. An adequate amount of safe water is necessary to prevent death from dehydration, to reduce the risk of water-related disease and to provide for consumption, cooking, personal and domestic hygienic requirements.
Bear Grylls is leading a team of 5 to take an ice breaking Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) through 2,500 miles of the infamous ice strewn North West Passage, linking the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans via the Arctic. The trip is sponsored by Future Capital Partners and Future Fuels and intends to raise money for charity Global Angels while raising awareness about climate change.
Background
Many explorers have ventured into the inhospitable Arctic regions in search of the infamous Northwest Passage, a navigable channel that was believed to connect the North Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans. The search lead to untold hardship and tragedy, but also eventually to heroism and endurance like no other.
Bear Grylls and his team of five will attempt to cross the North West Passage in an open Rigid Inflatable Boat named "Arctic Wolf". This small boat is a custom made RIB, with ice breaking capability and reinforced inflatable tubes. They will leave on the 15th of August from Pond Inlet, Canada, and spend around 14 days going West, all the way to Tuktoyaktuk.
Their Mission
The Northwest Passage journey is only possible because our climate is indeed changing. The trip is raising money for charity Global Angels to provide safe drinking water for children in need, whilst raising awareness of climate change.

The Old World Swallowtail caterpillar still has a defense against predators in the form of an organ called an osmeterium which consists of retractable, fleshy projections behind its head that can release a foul smell if disturbed.
